How to Accessorize like a Supermodel

Accessorizing is probably one of the most popular topics that I receive questions about. It’s the one thing that everyone wants to do, but many find intimidating. The truth is, it’s easy. A few key steps and your look will go from drab to fab – sorry I had to!

There are a few really good reasons to accessorize:

1 – You can take any outfit from ordinary to EXTRAordinary

2 – Accessorizing allows you to re-purpose previously worn and loved pieces, without anyone noticing or you feeling like it’s old

3 – If you properly accessorize, you can look just like your favourite celebrity. Seriously, it’s that simple.

I’ve curated some fabulous outfits below to help demonstrate. I’ve taken the LBD (Little Black Dress) as well as the very basic jeans and a tee, to help demonstrate the versatility that can be created with new accessories.

The Little Black Dress

The LBD is a staple to any fashionista’s wardrobe. Once you find the right LBD – you know, the one that you always reach for because of the way it flatters your body – you’ll never want another one. And you wont need another.

For a night look, I like to add a statement necklace, my favourite pair of killer heels (read: the pair that hurts the most) along with a stunning clutch. The key here is that those pieces can all be subbed out for others to create a new look. Or better yet, add a shawl or a cardigan. Want to wear your favourite dress to an important business meeting? Add a stylish blazer. Easy as pie!

Tip: When wearing a big and bold statement necklace, opt for either no earrings or studs.

“But Maggie, what about a more casual look?” Glad you asked! Have you ever reached for your LBD when you needed to go to a bridal/baby shower? Well you should. Yup, I said it. You can create a softer, more casual look by adding the right accessories.

Below, I’ve taken the same dress, and by adding a soft belt, cardigan and playful wedges, I’ve created a perfect bridal shower look. I finished the look with a cross-body purse and beautiful earrings. This look also works really well for a day at the office. Again, a good base – your LBD – is just the beginning of many outfits.

Tip: Layer your look with a cardigan to add a new flare.

Jeans and a Tee

A pair of jeans and a comfortable tee is often my go to look on the weekend. It is so basic, and yet can be worn so many different ways, dressed up and down. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t be fashionable. With the right accessories, you can look like a supermodel in jeans and a tee.

Take my Sunday brunch look for example: what is more celebrity than a big hat, dark sunglasses, a designer bag and a pair of white kicks?! Layer on some necklaces and arm candy to complete the look. I’ve also done this look with a silk scarf and a casual cardigan.

Tip: When wearing basics, stacked accessories are your friends. Layer your neck and arms, and don’t be afraid to mix metals.

That one was easy, right? Let’s kick it up a notch. Date night – or day, if you’re not ready to give your guy prime time yet 😉

This one is even easier than the last. I took the same look and switched up the shoes and the purse. Now, all of a sudden, you have an amazing date night look. Throw on a leather motto jacket and you’ll look like a million bucks!

Tip: Trade in your flats for heels to add sophistication.

Last but not least, we can’t forget about work. Sure, I can make really fun day and date night outfits, but utility is important. I get it. I have a real job too! Believe me when I say this, taking any outfit and making it work friendly is the easiest thing to do. I promise.

There are two tricks to any office look – pumps and a really well fitting blazer. For this look, I usually tuck in the white tee, add a belt, statement necklace, earrings, a blazer and if I have time, switch up my handbag.

Tip: Blazer and pumps. Enough said!

Now that you’re inspired, here are the key pieces you need to arm yourself with in order to successfully accessorize.

What you’ll need:

  • A few statement + layering necklaces
  • Earrings, both drop and studs
  • Stackable bracelets and a watch (optional)
  • A few cardigans of various colours
  • 1 or 2 well fitted blazers
  • A couple of belts to be worn with jeans (hips) and with a dress (waist)
  • Summer accessories – hats and sunnies

You don’t need to add to your already fabulous shoe or bag collection to accessorize. Instead, make due with more of the above accessories that are much more affordable.
