Yup, you read that right. Dolce & Gabbana has created an exquisite line of high-end, trendy hijab’s and abaya’s – traditional Muslim wear for females. Now for anyone that has ever visited the middle-east, heck even if you’ve seen Sex In the City 2, you know that a lot of Muslim women not only love fashion, but are also very stylish. So it is really refreshing to see a major designer label catering to such a growing, yet niche market. Sales of luxury goods in the Middle East is a HUGE market, estimated at $8.7 billion this past year (2015). And it’s growing.
Market aside, this line is glorious. The detail in the lace and embroidery is beyond beautiful. It is delicate, feminine and chic. I love this, and would wear it – if I were visiting the Middle East and could actually afford it!
My opinion (since this is my blog): I think this is a great move and a step in the right direction. While it’s not common play (yet), it is a growing market that deserves attention. I’m hoping more designers see that and start to design their lines for specific markets. My two cents.
